Description
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is at the
forefront of exploring the fundamental nature of the universe. At the
heart of CERN's work is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s
most powerful particle accelerator, which allows scientists
to probe the smallest building blocks of matter and the forces that
govern them.
This talk will introduce the basics of particle physics, focusing on
the Standard Model—a theoretical framework that describes elementary
particles and their interactions. We will discuss how the LHC has
enabled the observation of the Higgs boson, a ground
breaking discovery and all the questions we have yet to answer. The
presentation will also highlight current efforts to search for "new
physics" beyond the Standard Model, such as dark matter and other
phenomena that remain unexplained.
By the end of the talk, students will gain insight into the methods
and motivations behind modern particle physics research and understand
how the work being done at CERN pushes the boundaries of scientific
knowledge. This introduction aims to inspire curiosity
and interest in the fundamental science shaping our understanding of
the universe.
